This computer generated visualization depicts an overhead view of the trajectory that the Opportunity lander took into Meridiani Planum superimposed on a mosaic of the three DIMES images taken during descent.  The descent to the surface and bouncing along the surface are depicted as a red line. Initially, the Opportunity lander was traveling east, but near the end of its descent, it begins to move to the north. When the airbags are released, they bounce to the north into the crater shown at the top of the image. 

North is indicated by the red tipped arrow in the coordinate axes and East is indicated with a green tipped arrow.
