J. Grotzinger 1) El Capitan texture. This image shows a close up of the rock nicknamed "El Capitan". This is massive in the lower part but shows fine, parallel lamination in the upper part. The rock contains scattered spheroids, and more abundant scattered vugs that have a disk-like geometry. The spheroids are 1-2 mm in diameter, and the vugs are about 1 cm long. Note that neither feature has any systematic relationship with respect to the lamination. The vugs cross-cut bedding.
