Right eye of stereo MI mosaic of RAT hole taken by Opportunity on Sol 178. The target is "Diamond Jenness" and the image was taken after the 2nd grind on that target. The stereo was derived by the MI team using a technique called "depth from focus". Each of the 4 quadrants was imaged 3 times at different distances from the target. The sharpness of focus at each point was analyzed and from that, depth information was derived. Left and right eye views were then created from the depth information and the best-focused image. These 4 pairs (one per quadrant) were then mosaicked together into a perspective projection by the MIPL team, where both geometric and brightness seams were corrected. The depth has been exaggerated for clarity.
