Spirit Sol 65 Daily Image Caption Release Date: March 10, 2004 Image File Name: Source File Name: /collections/site-16/NAVCAMWedgeSet-position-0.wdml Summary Information: 360 degree Navcam panorama of Spirit's view after completing a drive on sol 65. Shows the rock dubbed "Hole Point" and the far edge of the Bonneville Crater Submitter: Larry Crumpler Institution: USGS Theme/Team/Group: Sol of Observation: 065 Earth Date of Observation: 03-09-04 Title of Image "A Glimpse of What's to Come" Caption: This 360 degree navigation camera mosaic was taken by Mars Exploration Rover Spirit on sol 65 after completing a drive that brought the rover less than 20 meters (65.62 feet) from the Bonneville crater rim. As predicted by scientists and rover operators, Spirit's new view includes a glimpse at the other side of Bonneville crater. This image also provided a close-up look at a 1 meter (3.3. feet) tall rock called "The Hole Point," which which has served as a beacon for scientists and rover operators in guiding the rover toward the crest of this crater. Scientists are anxious for Spirit to get to the very edge of the crater rim and peer down inside. Once Spirit reaches the summit, she will use almost every instrument and camera to analyze the floor and walls of the crater and hopefully reveal some secrets from this more ancient exposure of martian terrain.
